Ukraine\u2018s possible membership in BWC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 BCWT news by Lena Pasternak, director of\nBCWT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Reports from member-organizations (each\nreport max. 5 min).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MINUTES FOR THE\nGENERAL ASSEMBLY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> The Chairperson of BWC Kazimiera\nAstratoviene opened the meeting at 10:00 on Saturday April 21st 2018. The\nparticipants of the meeting shortly presented themselves, Lena introduced the\nlogistics of the day and reading in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> The Agenda of the meeting was\napproved by the Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Kazimiera Astratoviene<\/strong> was elected chairperson for the meeting, <strong>Piret Viires<\/strong> was elected secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> The Chairperson of the BWC,\nKazimiera Astratoviene, presented the <strong>activity\nreport for BWC<\/strong>, for the year of 2017\u201cOrganizing literary event \u201eOpen House\nin Visby\u201c: finding strength and support inside BWC\u201d :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The General Assembly of 2017 for the Baltic\nWriters Council was arranged on 28th\u201329th of April in Visby, Gotland. 14\npersons representing 11 organisations from 7 countries took part in the\nmeeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During last year\u2018s GA the most important issue\nwas literary event in Visby in 2018. It was decided to have a minor event there\nin the House, asking BWC member-organizations to invite poets, writers and\ntranslators and to cover their travel and accommodation costs. It also seemed\nimportant to have someone from Ukraine as an invited guest if only it will be\npossible due to our financial situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest challenges was getting a\nfunding for the event. With a help of The Association of Finnish Non-fiction\nWriters represented by a vice-chairperson Jukka-Pekka Pieti\u00e4inen BWC received a\ndonation: The Society of Swedish Authors in Finland, The Union of Finnish\nWriters, The Association of Finnish Non-fiction Writers supported the event financially\n\u2013 each of these organizations donated 1000 euros, so in the beginning of\nOctober 2017 we had 3000 euros and could proceed organizing the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3000 euros seemed enough to have an invited\nguest from Ukraine as it was planned. Ukrainian poet, translator and a\nchildren\u2018s book writer Halyna Kruk was invited to take part in the event \u201eOpen\nHouse in Visby\u201c. And Society of Swedish Authors in Finland, Swedish Writers&#8217;\nUnion, Estonian Writers&#8217; Union, Finnish Writers&#8217; Union, Latvian Writers&#8217; Union,\nLithuanian Writers&#8217; Union was willing to send their representatives to take\npart in the readings. So this evening we will have the pleasure listening to\nthem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was wonderful to find strength inside BWC,\nmembers supported and sent performers to the literary event \u201eOpen House in\nVisby\u201c. This all was an excellent example of collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GA approved the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> <strong>Membership questions.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5.1. The GA decided that the membership fee is\nthe same as previous years, <strong>150 euros<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5.2. Possible Ukrainian membership.\nThere was a discussion about membership of Ukrainian organization. Halyna Kruk,\nwho was representing Ukraine, informed the GA that Ukrainian Writers\nAssociation started to proceeded to get legal status last year. There is also a\nnew association of translators are also getting a legal status. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THE GA decided that the question should be\ndiscussed again next year. Meanwhile Kazimiera Astratoviene and Halyna Kruk\nwill be in touch to monitor the situation. Dmitri Plax noted that The Union of\nBelarusian Writers is supporting Ukrainian membership in BWC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5.3. Other membership issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jegor Fetisov suggested to contact Danish\nwriters union and ask if they would like to join BWC again. Jukka-Pekka Pieti\u00e4inen\nnoted that BWC has several members from Norway, but they have not come here. However,\nthey pay their fees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GA decided that Norwegians should be\napproached individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> <strong>BCWT news by Lena Pasternak, director of BCWT.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During 2017 213 writers stayed at the centre,\nrepresenting 26 countries, altogether 3000 guest days. 50% of them were writers,\n50% translators. 85% residents were from the Baltic countries, 15% Africa,\nCanada, China &#8211; rest of the world. 67% women, 33 % men. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweden is most present here, but also several residents\nfrom Germany and Russia. There have been 2 projects with Russia (Russian\ntranslators workshop and Swedish-Russian writers meeting). There was also a seminar\nfor French-Swedish translators with the support from Arts Council. Several\nseminars are planned (eg. seminar about Bergman, seminar for Lithuanian\ntranslators etc).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Baltic Sea cooperation is going on with Estonian\nWriters\u2019 Union and Ventspils House. The application for funding has been\nsubmitted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are scholarships available for\nBelorussian writers supported by Swedish Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estonian Writes\u2019 Union offers 4 scholarships, also\nGerman Translators fund offers scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BCWT &nbsp;is\na member of network of centers RECIT, Ventspils is a new member now, also\nEstonia Writers\u2019 Union is considering joining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been fruitful cooperation in Visby\nwith International Centre of Composers, Baltic Art Centre and with local\nlibrary in Almendalen. Also there is good cooperation with schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The budget of BCWT is 2 million SEK, 75% is supported\nby Arts council. Region Gotland is supporting with 400000 SEK. BWCT has two\nfull-time employees. There is challenge to get the money for renovations; perhaps\nit is possible to get donations for the renovations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BWTC is a centre for cultural diplomacy,\ncultural exchange. The strength of the centre \u2013 it is a house built by writers\nand translators, it is a place to visit for work and contemplation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> <strong>Reports from member-organizations.<\/strong> The delegates from each\norganization presented reports. There\nis surplus 12&nbsp;039 SEK from the year 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The economy is stable, 79&nbsp;683 SEK is in the\nbank account. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GA agreed the BWC would pay an amount to BWTC\nfor the administration and give the board the right to decide the amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GA accepted the budget for 2018:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BWC activities 26&nbsp;000 SEK (income\nmembership fees), Literary event \u201cOpen house in Visby\u201d 29&nbsp;301,10 SEK<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GA accepted the budget for 2019 &#8211; BWC\nactivities 26&nbsp;000 SEK (income membership fees). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Membership fee &#8211; 2017, 2 members have not paid;\n2018, 7 members have not paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9.<\/strong> <strong>Auditors report.<\/strong> Justyna Czechowska and Lena Pasternak presented\nthe Auditors report. The auditor found the books in order, finances were used\naccording to the purposes and the board was granted freedom of responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After hearing the Treasurer\u2019s report and\nAuditor\u2019s report General Assembly approved unanimously the finances of 2017 and\nthe budgets for 2018 and 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10.<\/strong> &nbsp;<strong>Reports\nfrom member organizations<\/strong> continued. See <strong>Appendix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10.1. Kazimiera Astratoviene (Lithuanian\nAssociation of Literary Translators) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the report there was a discussion about\ntranslators\u2019 situation. &nbsp;The GA made a\nsuggestion to organise a roundtable on translators situation during the GA in\n2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GA formed a working group to prepare\nthis roundtable: Justyna Czechowska, Dmiti Plax, Jegor Fetisov, Taina\nHelkamo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10.2. &nbsp;Mudite\nTreimane (Latvian Writers\u00b4 Union) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11.<\/strong> <strong>Election of Baltic Writers Council board members.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Election of the BWC Board members:\nJukka-Pekka Pieti\u00e4inen (retiring by rotation), Mudite Treimane (retiring by\nrotation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the result of\nthe elections <strong>Malin Kivel\u00e4 <\/strong>and <strong>Mudite Treimane<\/strong> &nbsp;were elected to the board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>12. Election of\nAuditors.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Johanna Sandberg<\/strong> and <strong>Justyna Czechowska<\/strong> were elected auditors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>13.<\/strong> <strong>Other issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>15.1 Travel grant. No restrictions in applying,\nbut the board decides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>15.2. There was also confirmation from the Estonian state that it is\npossible to continue with the project of writers\u2019 salaries (12 salaries, 1000\neur netto a month + social guarantees). These salaries give writers a chance to\nfocus on writing. The Council who selects the authors consists of\nrepresentatives of Estonian Writers\u2019 Union, National Library, and Estonian\nLiterature Centre etc. Right now there are 6 male authors and 6 female authors\nwho have received the salaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has\nbeen collaboration with Finnish Writers\u2019 Union as well as collaboration with\nSanasto. Finnish organisations have advised how to proceed with PLR is Estonia.\nRight now the sum for remuneration in Estonia is 125&nbsp;000 EUR, in Finland\nthe sum is 15 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has\nalso been active cooperation with three Baltic writers\u2019 unions, meeting in\nRiga, seminar in K\u00e4smu. The cooperation is financed by Nordic Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>London\nBook Fair 2018 was a success story, as the Baltic countries were the main\nguests in the fair. There was a successful communication between Baltic\ncountries. After the book fair there was held a literary event \u2013 &nbsp;EstLitFest, which was also very popular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now\nthere are 327 members in the Estonian Writers\u2019 Union, including writers, translators,\nliterary scholars etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estonian\nWriters\u2019 Union belong to two international frameworks &#8211; Baltic Writers\u2019 Council\nand European Writers\u2019 Council. Chairman Tiit Aleksejev is a board member of EWC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Marius Burokas\n(Lithuanian Writers\u2019 Union)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A\nstatistical look: at this time, the Lithuanian Writer\u2019s Union has 366 members,\ncomprised of 232 men and 134 women. From last year into this one, it lost 9\nmembers, while 4 were accepted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2017 was\nan important year for writers and the Union because of many international\nevents. Last year saw feverish activity in preparation for the London Book Fair\nof 2018, where Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were special Market Focus guests:\n19 books by Lithuanian authors were translated into English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also one\nof the Lithuanian literature festivals \u2013 Druskininkai Poetic Fall was\nshortlisted for London Book Fair Excellence Awards as one of the best literary\nfestivals (together with the Polish Conrad festival and George Town Literary\nFestival from Malaysia). Last year the DPF got the international recognition &#8211;\nEFFE (Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe) label for 2017-2018 years.\nThis quality label is given to festivals with an artistic commitment,\ninvolvement in their local communities and a European and global outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nLithuanian Writers Foundation residency program was successfully continued in\n2017. Five translators of Lithuanian literature (Anita van der Molen\n(Netherlsnds), Sotirios Suliotis (Greece), Claudia Sinnig (Germany), Ma\u0142gorzata\nGiera\u0142towska (Poland) and Ana Gerasimova (Russia) were invited to spend a month\nin Palanga to translate into their primary languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithuanian\nWriters Foundation also organized Lithuanian literature translation workshops\nin Warsaw and Riga universities Baltic studies centres. Lithuanian Writers\nUnion continued it\u2019s usual activities in schools and with young and emerging\nwriters: there were \u201cReading Hours\u201d with Lithuanian writers in ethnic\nminorities schools, there were translation workshops called \u201cThe Literary\nDietine\u201d in Poland Lithuanian speaking island in Seinai. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A continuing\nproject is the \u201cSummer Academy\u201d in which high school writers from throughout\nLithuania are invited to the Writer\u2019s Union summer retreats at Nida or Palanga\nfor a week where they take part in writing workshops, listen to a series of\nlectures on Lithuanian literature, and work together with writers and critics<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the\nassistance of the Writer\u2019s Union, our writers continued to participate in\nliterature and poetry festivals in other countries. Also there was a German\nembassy funded bilingual poetry festival and workshop \u201eBetween Tongues\u201c,\norganized by a poet and translator Schirin Nowroussian and Lithuanian Writers\nUnion. There were international bilingual poetry readings in Writers Union and\nthe multilingual almanac was published by Writers Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgian\ntranslators project \u201cThe Sails of Lithuanian Literature\u201d whose goal was to\ntranslate a large amount of Lithuanian literary works into Georgian was also\nsuccessfully conducted last year. There was a special Lithuanian edition of\nGeorgian literary magazine \u201eApra\u201c (Sails) which was presented to Georgian\nreaders and audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year\nLithuanian Writers Union joined a totally new project \u2013 \u201cBaltic countires\nWriters Unions network\u201d. There was a meeting in Riga with members of Latvian\nand Estonian Writers Unions, where representatives decided on closer\ncollaboration and joint projects. Next meeting was this year in Estonia, in\nK\u00e4smu, where was agreed on further meetings in Lithuania and Latvia. There will\nbe translation workshops, joint events and other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\npublishing house of the Lithuanian Writer\u2019s Union continues to release more\nLithuanian prose and poetry than any other publishers. 56 books were published\nin 2017, 34 by Lithuanian authors, including 14 poetry books as well as 1\npoetry collection in Lithuanian translation. Unfortunately, state support for\npublication is continuously dwindling \u2013 last year only 12 books out of 41 were\nsupported by the state, only one fourth of what was asked for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nliterary press supported by Lithuanian culture foundations and by the Writer\u2019s\nUnion has been in a dismal condition \u2013 lack of funds as always. Anyway, they\nare continuing their fight for survival and better financing. Culture weekly\n\u201eLiterat\u016bra ir menas\u201c (Literature and Art) caused a scandal publishing a totally\nempty issue with blank pages. Lithuanian&nbsp;\nCouncil for Culture&nbsp; and the\nPress, Radio and Television Support Foundation was caught in that scandal and,\nit seems, the foundation would be reorganized this year. Literat\u016bra ir menas is\nstill alive, but continuing as biweekly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nweekly publication of the Writer\u2019s Union, <em>Metai<\/em>\nchanged it\u2019s design and the magazine of Lithuanian literature in English \u2013 <em>Vilnius Review<\/em>, continued to publish the\nbest of recent Lithuanian literature. The print edition \u2013 anthology of the best\nLithuanian writing \u2013 was also published in 2017. Vilnius Review also started\nfilming poetry videos of poets, reading in their favourite locations. Videos\nare subtitled in English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As is\ncustomary, Lithuania hosted two major poetry festivals \u2013 Poetry Spring and\nDruskininkai Poetic Fall. The 52<sup>st<\/sup> international Poetry Spring took\nplace as always over the last two weeks of May. A handful of guests from abroad\ntook part, and Lithuanian authors travelled to Switzerland, Ireland, Great\nBritain, France, Poland, and Russia to read their poems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The theme\nof the Druskininkai Poetic Fall festival last year was \u201cWomen and Men in\nLiterature: Contexts of Imagination\u201d. Discussions in public and in social media\nbegan even before the Festival events. After many years it was the theme\nimportant for all people in literature field and even not only in Literature\nfield. The discussion on this theme on Friday was the beginning of the\nFestival. Literature critics, feminist rights activists, writers and other\nguests discussed on situation in Lithuania and the world. The festival\nanthology published 14 guests from USA, Japan, Israel, Poland, Slovenia,\nCroatia, Italy, other countries. Also 6 poets from Lithuania were presented to\nthe audience. The anthology also published laureates of the previous year as\nwell as work from visiting Versopolis poets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>&nbsp;Egor Fetisov (St. Petersburg Writers\u2019 Union)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I represent the Union of the Saint Petersburg writers.\nI understand that it is very boring to listen to the report about the union\nactivities in 2017, but let me take three minutes of your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of today there are 482 members at the Union of the\nSaint Petersburg writers. 67 of&nbsp; them\nhave joined for the last three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2017 at the General ass<strong>e<\/strong>mbly the majority of votes were cast\nfor novel and drama writer Valery Popov. He was reelected for next 3 years as\nthe head of the union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always there were many presentations, exhibitions\nand meetings in 2017 and beginning of 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also the year when St. Petersburg writers got a\nnumber of literature prizes. Evgeny Vodolazkin gor a historical-litterature\nprize \u201cClio\u201d, which is awarded to the writers who reflect the historical\nbackground of the country. Another Saint Petersburg writer Alexander Melikhov\ngot a prizq, awarded by the literature magazine \u201cZvezda\u201d for his essays. And\nthe famous writer Daniil Granin, who is well known for his novels \u201dThe bison\u201d\nand \u201cInto the storm\u201d got the \u201cState prize of the Russian Federation\u201d.\nUnfortunately he died soon after the ceremony at the age of 98. Granin was an\nimportant era of St. Petersburg literature, a moral example for many\ngenerations of the readers. His bitter and truthful memories about the 2nd\nworld war and the Siege of Leningrad are reflected in his works. His other main\nworks are \u201cMy lieut<strong>e<\/strong>nant\u201d and \u201cA\nbook of the Blockade\u201d, which was written together with Alesj Adamovich. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently The XV-th international \u201cFestival of humor\u201d\ntook place in Saint Petersburg. The festival included a competition for the\nshort-story-writers called\n\u201cRed nose 2018\u201d. This time it was awarded to the playwriter Nadezhda Ptushkina\nfrom Moscow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now about fantasy and science fiction. In October 2017\nBelyaev festival took place in Saint Petersburg. It is an important literature\ncompetition named after a famous science fiction writer Alexander Belyaev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St. Petersburg is going to apply for a UNESCO\ncompetition World book capital-2020. It can provide unique opportunity for the\ncity to be promoted in the world of books. Saint Petersburg has good chances to\nwin this competition thanks to many events which take place in the city. For\nexample, annual St. Petersburg book fair, that you can visit next month, Book\navenue on Malaya Konyushennya street, mobile library in the underground. It is\na rather interesting thing. If you are travelling on orange underground line in\nSaint Petersburg, you can follow the instructions and login to the site where\nyou can download free of charge 100 modern books. The Saint Petersburg union of\nthe writers got back the right to represent its books in the big bookstore in\nthe center of the city, called \u201cwriters\u2019 book store\u201d. The book store opened its\nsubsidiaries in Serbia, Belorussia and Greece, where saint-petersburg writers\nare now represented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our union actively cooperates with foreign\ncounterparts and publishing houses. There was a number of international\nmeetings and presentations in 2017, such as a meeting with Cathrine Lovey, a\npsychologist and writer from France, a presentation of magazines\n\u201cmetamorphoses\u201d, Minsk, Belorussia;&nbsp; \u201cVerb\u201d,\nRussian-language magazine in Paris, France; \u201cMilky Way\u201d (Israel), and a\npresentation of poetry volume \u201cA voice of woman\u201d, published in Finnish, Swedish\nand Russian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0421reative writing seminars continue their work. A new\nseminar of young free verse (vers libre) poets \u201cDereveter; Treewind\u201d under the\nguidance of Olga Turkina was launched in 2017. Another seminar \u201cYoung St.\nPetersburg\u201d for school pupils and young writers by Roman Vsevolodov who himself\nwrites prose for children and youth, has been successfully working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year we organize exhibitions in the House of\nwriters called Writers &#8211; artists\u201c. They include presentation of paintings made\nby writers as well as presentation of new books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To commemorate the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the\nliterature for kids in Russia we have been working on a volume of short stories\nby St. Petersburg children\u2019s writers under a name \u201cChristmas Tree 1918-2018\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A workshop of drama writers published in 2017 a volume\nof theatre plays by modern St. Petersburg writers. A volume of short stories\nabout St. Petersburg called \u201cCity 812\u201d is well under way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gogol\u2019s prize continue its work. The big jury will\nselect books in 3 niminations, prize will be awarded as always at St.\nPetersburg international book fair in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite limited financial resources St. Petersburg\nunion of writers sets the tone of all literature activities of the city and\nparticipates in all important events of the literature life of Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>&nbsp;Jukka-Pekka Pieti\u00e4inen (The Association of\nFinnish Non-Fiction Writers)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nAssociation awarded almost EUR 2.3 million in grants. These grants are financed\nout of copying fees collected by the Kopiosto Copyright Society. This will\nremain as the record level, because photocopying is declining fast and digital\ncopying is not replacing it. Added to which, pictures and magazines are being\ncopied more than non-fiction books in the digital world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\ncourse for writers of non-fiction was held for the sixth time. The topics of\nthe six-day training were non-fiction culture in general, non-fiction writing\nskills, copyrights and publishing agreements, being a non-fiction writer,\npublishing skills, and digital publication. Training in other subjects was also\narranged. The courses in non-fiction books and pictures, and in social media,\nfor example, proved popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nJanuary 2019, the Association is to publish an article collection entitled \u201cThe\nNew School\u201d. Based on research findings, it will report what is known about\nteaching and learning and the practical experience so far gained. One example\nof this is the increase in online teaching. It is a topical work now that\ndigitalisation is changing the nature of teaching materials, and now that\nnon-fiction books have entered the senior high-school curriculum for Finnish\nlanguage and literature. The Association produced two book catalogues as an aid\nfor teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One\nof the catalogues gives recommended reading for the senior high-school. It was\npublished in August 2016 in an edition of 10,000 and distributed to, among\nothers, all teachers of Finnish language and literature. It was also published\nin digital format on the Association website. A new edition is to be published\nin August 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nother catalogue, published in January 2017, gave suggestions for the lower\nschool and pre-school. A new edition is to be published in January 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together\nwith the Tammi Publishing House we launched a writing competition for\nchildren\u2019s and teenage non-fiction. Not enough non-fiction is published for\nthem in Finland. The winners were announced at the Helsinki Book Fair in\nOctober 2017 and the first books will be published next autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commercial\ncompanies publish only one third of Finland\u2019s non-fiction. Non-fiction books\nare also published by educational and research institutions, museums, libraries\nand archives, the public administration, associations, non-governmental\norganisations and foundations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nare also many \u2018stakeholder publishers\u2019 for whom publishing is not their core\nbusiness. They nevertheless publish literature that supports this business. An\nexample is the City of Helsinki, which publishes 80 non-fiction books per year;\nthis would be enough to place it in the top 12 list of commercial publishers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nvolume of self publishing is growing and the average quality is improving. Some\nnon-fiction writers have no alternative but to publish their books themselves,\nbecause the commercial publishers have reduced their number of titles. Many\ncoaches and consultants are able to sell their books themselves, so they prefer\nto publish them, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Printing\ncosts have fallen dramatically in this age of digitalisation, so the financial\npotential for publishing at the writer\u2019s expense has improved. Marketing is\neasy in social media if a book has a clearly-defined target readership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writers\nearn little. Royalties are small. Hence the need for library lending fees,\ncopying fees and grants. Luckily, quite a few non-fiction writers have a second\noccupation, as teachers, university lecturers, researchers, journalists,\ncoaches and consultants. The number of freelancers, i.e. self-employed persons,\nhas risen rapidly due to, among other things, the sweeping changes taking place\nin the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nhighlight of 2017 was TIETOKIRJA.FI, a non-fiction festival held in Helsinki\nfor the sixth time on August 30\u201331, 2017. Over these two days, the festival\nfeatured more than 100 non-fiction writers and enthusiasts. The events were\nopen to the public and free. It was full house almost all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finland\u2019s\nnext parliamentary elections will be held in April 2019 and we are in the\nprocess of writing our aims for the government programme. As in the run-up to\nthe two previous elections, we will be arranging 13 political panel debates in\nvarious parts of Finland in late 2018 and early 2019. Four Members of\nParliament from at least four parties will be invited to take part in these\ndebates. The topics for discussion will be the role of non-fiction and\ntextbooks and the importance of reading and education to the Finns\u2019 wellbeing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>&nbsp;Peter Sandstr\u00f6m (Society of Swedish Authors in\nFinland) <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our union has approximately 200\nmembers, all Finnish fiction writers who write in Swedish. The union was\nfounded in 1919 so next year we celebrate our centennial. On the whole there is\na big interest among new writers to apply for membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general situation can be\nconsidered OK for fiction writers in Finland. Special issues for the\nSwedish-speaking writers must be seen through the fact that we are a language\nminority. People who speak Swedish as their mother-tongue represent 5,5 % of\nthe population in Finland (approx. 300 000 out of 5,8 millions). This\nhighlights the importance to for example make sure that the Swedish language is\nproperly represented in commissions and committees that decide upon grants,\nprizes etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our everyday work consists of\nroutines about copyright issues, contracts, economical issues etc. To some\nextent we are also offering our service to non-members. We have one employee at\nthe office in Helsinki, the Secretary General Johanna Sandberg as of May 2017.\nShe followed long time Secretary General Merete Jensen who is now retired.\nSince 2013 Peter Sandstr\u00f6m is the president of the society. Every year we have\na party for all our members the same day as the&nbsp;\nspring meeting which elects the board and decides on other important\nissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a small organization, and\nrepresenting a language minority, it is very important for us to cooperate on\ndifferent levels: domestic, Nordic, European and international. We do not want\nto be left alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>&nbsp;Suvi Oinonen (Finnish Writers Union)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Proceedings\nin Finland in 2017<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public\nLending Right Compensation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PLR\ncompensations for authors are handled and dealt in Finland by copyright society\nSanasto. In 2012, Sanasto carried out an extensive and highly successive campaign\nin order to get the total sum of the compensation raised. in 2012 compensation\nwas 3,6 million \u20ac<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All\nFinnish political parties committed themselves to raising the compensation and\nwhen Finland celebrated its 100 anniversary the PLR compensation raised to 14\nmillion euros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2017\nAnnual Report of the Union of Finnish Writers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union\nof Finnish Writers, founded in 1897, is an organization for Finnish-language\nfiction writers. At the end of 2017 the Union had 765 members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Board\nof the Union consists of a President, Sirpa K\u00e4hk\u00f6nen, and of eight members and\nfour deputy members. The executive director is Suvi Oinonen, and the office\nstaff consists of totally five persons for example lawyer who helps members\nwith contracts. Unions purpose is to develop the material and non-material\nconditions of writers\u2019 work as well as to promote Finnish literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlights\nin 2017<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union\nhad a historian working for three years to write the history of the Union. Book\nnamed Kivelle perustettu was published last October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information\nservices and different kind of events for writers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union\nhas a lawyer, whose main task is to help members to solve their various\nprofessional problems with contracts, social security issues, or taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017,\neleven events were arranged and conducted by the Union for the members on\nvarious themes and issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Literary\nEvents<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union\nplanned and organized a several-day literary programme for both of the two\nmajor Finnish book fairs, in Turku and in Helsinki, in October. More than 100 writers,\nmost of them members of the Union, participated as lecturers or readers,\ninterviewees etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017\nUnion also arranged five literary events in five different towns in Finland.\nMiten kirjani ovat syntyneet \u2013 how my books were born and these events reached\nover 300 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Taina\nHelkamo (The Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters) <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\nPromotion of interests\/lobbying<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A long-sought-for change for the better was achieved in 2017: \u201cThe Lending\nBased Remuneration\u201d <em>(remuneration based\non lending frequency to individual authors and translators for the loans of\nlibrary books to the public)<\/em> payable in Finland was brought up to the level\nof the other Nordic countries. The higher compensation was paid out for the\nfirst time in early 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lobbying was mainly carried out by the Finnish literary copyright\nsociety&nbsp;Sanasto in co-operation with the literary\norganisations of authors and translators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\nSKTL&nbsp;has also participated in the Finnish\nliterary copyright society&nbsp;Sanasto\u2019s\nwork of influencing the EU and national decision-makers in order to have\nArticle 12 in the DSM Directive Proposal removed or at least revised. As it is\nproposed, the article is disadvantageous to authors and translators. This work\ncontinues in 2018. The President of&nbsp;SKTL,&nbsp;Heikki&nbsp;Karjalainen, is also President of the Finnish literary copyright\nsociety&nbsp;Sanasto; thus, SKTL&nbsp;takes an active part in the lobbying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SKTL&nbsp;participated in celebration of Finland\u2019s 100th\nanniversary in 2017<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, Finland celebrated its 100th anniversary as an independent\ncountry. Citizens and organisations were invited to participate in the\ncelebration with their own programme and to apply for the inclusion of their\nprojects as part of the official anniversary programme. SKTL&nbsp;contributed with a series of nine lectures on\ntranslating and interpreting in co-operation with five universities, one\nuniversity of applied sciences and the Finnish National Agency for Education.\nEach event consisted of an academic lecture followed by a more practice-related\npresentation. The topics covered literary translation during the independence\nprocess and in the first years of independence, and translation was also\ndiscussed as a necessary element in the building up of culture, science and\ncommon knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education and information for translators<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In co-operation with&nbsp;FILI&nbsp;(Finnish\nLiterature Exchange), SKTL organised a four-day Finnish-English-Finnish Summer\nSchool for translators in the summer. SKTL&#8217;s section for literary translators\narranged&nbsp;several&nbsp;meetings and events on a variety of topics for its\nmembers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information to the public<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebration of Finland\u2019s 100th anniversary mentioned above was mainly\ndesigned for the purposes of \u201cmarketing\u201d SKTL and the field.&nbsp;Several other\nevents and happenings were intended to serve as information to the public. In\nparticular, discussion evenings with authors and their translators attracted\nsizeable audiences, as did a lecture series on Finnish translations and\ntranslators of French literature.SKTL&nbsp;has\na stand on two Book Fairs in Finland every year, both in Helsinki and&nbsp;Turku, and contributes actively to the fair programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>News from the administration of&nbsp;SKTL<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New by-laws were adopted in 2017, and they are effective since 1 January 2018.\nThe most important change was the reduction of the number of Board members from\n12 to 9. The General Assembly also adopted a new document, the Code of Ethics,\nas binding guidelines for all&nbsp;SKTL\u2019s\nmembers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Code of ethics in English: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sktl.fi\/kaantaminen_ja_tulkkaus\/tyokalupakki-ammattilaiselle-ja-\/code-of-ethics\/\">https:\/\/www.sktl.fi\/kaantaminen_ja_tulkkaus\/tyokalupakki-ammattilaiselle-ja-\/code-of-ethics\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>&nbsp;Dmitri Plax (The Union of Belarusian Writers) <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, there were no positive\nchanges in the authorities\u2019 attitude towards civil society. Dialogue with civil\nsociety was of a random and pinpoint character. In February 2017, due to the\nsharp deterioration of the economic situation and the accepted tax on the\nunemployed (President\u2019s Decree \u21163), spontaneous protest actions, as well as\nthose organized with the assistance of the opposition, began to take place all\nover the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this moment, the authorities\ntried to apply their repressive methods against the writers of the independent Union of\nBelarusan Writers. Several weeks prior to the 17th Congress of the UBW, they\npublished \u201cAddition to President\u2019s Decree \u21163\u201d that excluded the union of\nwriters from the List of creative organizations of Belarus, i.e. UBW writers were\nnow equated with the unemployed and had to pay the so-called \u201cunemployment\ntax\u201d. The UBW accepted several appeals to the authorities and sent an appeal to\nthe Council of the Ministry of Culture. As a result of negotiations with the\nMinistry and official correspondence, members of the independent Union of\nBelarusan Writers were reinstated in their rights. In this aspect, power\ndecided not to aggravate the confrontation with the literary community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, the KGB fabricated the\ncase of the activity of the patriotic-sports organization &#8220;White\nLegion&#8221;, which stopped its existence in the beginning of the 2000s. On the\neve of the March 25th action, more than 20 people were arrested. Some of these people already\nlost all contacts with each other long time ago. This situation affected directly\nthe UBW and its publishing and book distribution activity. Miras\u1e37a\u016d \u1e36azo\u016dsk\u0456 was one of the main figurants of\nthe Case. He has been cooperating for many years with the Union of Belarusan\nWriters in the direction of book distribution and has his work place in the\noffice of the organization. Viktar Dani\u1e37a\u016d, who is \u1e36azo\u016dsk\u0456\u2019s assistant,\nbookseller and driver, was arrested, too. One of the closest partners of the\nUBW &#8211; Ale\u015b Ja\u016ddacha, director of the independent Internet bookshop Knihi.by \u2013\nwas arrested as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After their detention, both\nInternational Public Society \u201cBelarusans\u2019 World Association \u00abBa\u0107ka\u016d\u0161\u010dyna\u00bb\u201d\n(\u00abHomeland\u00bb) and UBW were preparing for searches &#8211; actually the offices of\nthese organizations were paralyzed for several weeks. Employees continued to\nwork from their houses. The prisoners got the freedoom the day before the OSCE summit\nthat took place in the beginning of July in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In any country, the cultural\nsphere is the foundation of the development of the consciousness and unity of\nthe nation, but in the state building of Belarus it traditionally occupies the\nlast place (on pages of the state-run mass media and in Belarus\u2019 budget) and is\nused for the sake of the state ideology. The majority of means in 2018 will be\ndirected to finance force structures and to strengthen the ideological control,\nincluding the state-run television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term &#8220;soft\nBelarusanization&#8221; is still voiced by some representatives of the public\nand by the authorities, but it is not supported by real steps and changes in\nthe work of the latter. It is particularly obvious in the education sphere that\nstill remains Russian-speaking; textbooks on humanitarian sciences are\nbasically oriented achievements of Russian culture and science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this difficult situation in\nBelarus, the Union of Belarusian Writers does its best to promote Belarusian\nliterature to the wide range of readers in Belarus and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our\nactivities in 2017<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2017 the 17th congress of the\nUnion of Belarusan Writers\ntook its place. Viveka Sj\u00f6gren (Swedish Writers\u2019\nUnion) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swedish Writers\u2019 Union Annual Report 2017<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Report written by Gunnar Ardelius<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chair of the Swedish Writers\u2019 Union<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In accordance with the statutes, the Writers\u2019 Union is\nthere to protect writers\u2019 freedom of expression and strengthen members\u2019 working\nconditions as writers and translators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Major events in 2017 included a historically large\nincrease in the Public Lending Right (PLR), the stranding of the translators\u2019\nframework agreement, #Metoo, copyrights within the EU, intensified\ninternational solidarity with vulnerable colleagues, and a substantial\nbreakthrough in public opinion and the media regarding the Union\u2019s issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the spring, the Writers\u2019 Union negotiated the\nbasic PLR amounts for 2018 and 2019. The agreement made in April 2017 means\nthat the basic amount of royalty paid when original Swedish works are borrowed\nhas increased by eight \u00f6re to SEK 1.68 for 2018 and by another eight \u00f6re to SEK\n1.76 for 2019. All in all, the total amount of PLR will increase by just under\nSEK 7 million to about SEK 163.8 million in 2018 and by another SEK 7.8 million\nto around SEK 171.6 million in 2019. This good outcome is the result of long-term\nlobbying, both before and during the term of the current government, where the\nWriters\u2019 Union has insistently stressed the democratic value of literature and\nthe role of libraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was some turbulence during 2017 regarding the\ntranslators\u2019 agreement. The framework agreement between the Swedish Writers\u2019\nUnion and the Swedish Publishers\u2019 Association was terminated by the latter\nparty during the spring and the agreement expired at Midsummer. Nevertheless,\nmost publishers have continued to use the \u201cstandard agreement\u201d to the delight\nof the translators. The main exception was Bonnierf\u00f6rlagen who launched their\nown agreement in August. That agreement implied such a worsening of terms that\nthe Translators\u2019 Section felt they had to advise translators not to sign it. At\nthe end of November, the Writers\u2019 Union issued a dissuasion which drew\nattention from both the media and the publishing sector but, in particular, it\ngenerated huge commitment and solidarity among members. The process gave rise\nto discussions between the Union and Bonnierf\u00f6rlagen, the aim of which was to\nreach a mutually established agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Writers\nCouncil is an association of European writers and translators organisations,\nrepresenting more than 160,000 writers and translators from 34\ncountries.&nbsp;At the annual meeting in Barcelona in June, Gunnar Ardelius was\nelected as Chair. Renewed\nefforts regarding freedom of expression in Europe and work linked to the EU\ndirective regarding digital copyright have had high priority on the Council\u2019s\nagenda. The 2018 annual meeting will be held in\nMinsk to support the work of the independent Belarusian writers\u2019 union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Swedish Writers\u2019\nUnion organised a very well-attended discussion evening on #Metoo with a panel\ndiscussion and readings by female writers.&nbsp;Shortly thereafter, the Union\nBoard appointed a working group whose task is to draw up documents and policies\nthat will give members protection, knowledge and preparedness regarding sexual\nharassment and increase equality within the book industry. Chair Gunnar\nArdelius contacted the Publishers\u2019 Association and bookstore organisations to\ntry to bring about a common practice within the industry.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Book Fair in\nGothenburg aroused passionate engagement among members concerning the question\nof attending or boycotting the fair because of the presence of the extreme\nright newspaper <em>Nya Tider.<\/em> The\nWriters\u2019 Union gave its support to all members irrespective of standpoint. A\nmeeting was arranged for members to be able to discuss the matter. The Writers\u2019\nUnion took part in the book fair as planned with a programme for members and\nthe general public. The Union also participated in the parallel event \u201c<em>Scener och samtal<\/em>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sami working group has been active. <em>B\u00e1go in Books<\/em>, the Sami festival of\nliterature in Jokkmokk on 16-18 November, was 2017\u2019s most important happening.\nThe Union Board attended the event. During the festival, it was announced that\na centre of literature (<em>FC S\u00e1pmi<\/em>)\nwill be created thanks to funding from Postkodlotteriet, Region Norrbotten,\nJokkmokk municipality and the Swedish Arts Council. The procedure whereby the\nWriters\u2019 Union has two Sami representatives was made permanent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with Sweden\u2019s arts councillor in Moscow,\nStefan Ingvarsson, the Union organised a conference for Russian-Swedish writers\nand translators at the end of October at the Baltic Centre for Writers and\nTranslators in Visby, the purpose of which was to protect free expression and\npromote literary interchange. Willing support was provided by the Swedish Academy,\nSwedish Arts Council and Swedish Institute. Four Russian and four Swedish\nwriters and four literary translators, two from each language area, all with\ndifferent political and professional starting points, participated in a\nthree-day workshop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On account of an invitation from the Swedish embassy,\na delegation visited Peking in April. The purpose of the trip was to establish\ncontacts with Chinese writers and translators in order to increase awareness of\nSwedish literature in China and vice versa. Freedom of expression, censorship\nand copyright were high up on the agenda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, a manifestation of support was organised\noutside the Chinese embassy in Stockholm for Swedish citizen Gui Minhai. He is\nstill being held in prison without having had a trial and he has still not been\ngiven the right to have a lawyer. He has been forced to \u201cadmit\u201d his crimes\nseveral times on China\u2019s state television. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, another manifestation of support was held for freedom of\nexpression in Turkey where there has been rapid deterioration. Media\ninstitutions are being closed down one after another and self-censorship has\nbecome an everyday occurrence. In August, Swedish citizen Hamza Yalcin was\nimprisoned in Spain after Turkey had initiated a search via Interpol. After\nprotests by the Writers\u2019 Union and several sister organisations, Yalcin was\nreleased and able to return to Sweden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cooperation with various writing and publishing courses at Stockholm\nUniversity has resulted in many prospective union members and prospective\ncolleagues in the book industry visiting the <em>F\u00f6rfattarnas hus<\/em> building to acquaint themselves with the Writers\u2019\nUnion\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong> <\/strong><strong>Kazimiera Astratoviene (Lithuanian Association of Literary Translators) <\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lithuanian Association of\nLiterary Translators was founded in 2004, so now our organization if fourteen\nyears old, it has 120 members and many of its activities already became traditional,\nthey are an important part of the cultural life of Vilnius city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, it is hard to\nimagine Vilnius Book Fair without the election of the best translated book of\nthe year. This year as many times before experts (literary translators and critics)\nmade the long list of 25 books and present the best translated book of the\nyear, elected by readers from the long list. Many readers are using the long\nlist for selecting the books, so the competition reached its goal \u2013 to help\nreaders select the most significant works of world literature, promote reading.\nAnd even to popularize the profession of a literary translator.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also traditional to\nannounce that a year is dedicated to certain literature: we already had Asian\nliterature, Ukrainian literature, Hungarian literature, Polish literature\nyears. And 2017 was declared the Year of Italian literature. There were\norganized seminars and discussions with the literary translators from Italian\nlanguage, readings of the books translated from Italian, also the competition\nfor young translators from Italian has been organized. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Assocation also has many\nawards for translators and not only them: it\u2018s St Jerome Awards to a literary\ntranslator for his\/her translations into the Lithuanian language as well as to\na translator from the Lithuanian language; awards to the editor of fiction and\nhumanitarian literature for the lifetime achievements; award to a novice\ntranslator for the best translation d\u00e9but; Bi\u010diuli\u0173 or Friends Award which is\ngiven to an individual or an organization for contributing substantially to\nartistic translation during the recent year. And one more \u2013 award for a best\nmovie texts\u2018 translator of the year. The partner of this award is popular movie\nfestival \u201eMovie spring\u201c. In this occasion seminar for movie texts\u2018 translators\nwere also conducted.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One more bit of news is that The\nAssociation started to publish the online magazine called Hieronymus: its aim\nis to publish most valuable texts of prose and poetry translated from different\nlanguages, focus on the most important literary news, also publish interviews\nwith the translators and translation reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As many of you already know, our\nAssocation has one more award and it\u2018s the most famous or even notoriuos. It\u2018s\nthe Antiprize. It can be given to a translator, editor, publisher or a bookshop\nfor a poor or inaccurate translation, for a distortion of a translated text by\nan editor, for a disrespect for a translated text or a profession of\ntranslator. This year for the first time the Antiprize went to the politician\nAlgirdas Sysas for a proposal to increase taxes for the authors. The reason for\nthat was the idea that the authors need to pay the same taxes as everybody else\nin order to have a pension and a payed holidays. But in reality bigger taxes\nfor authors doesn\u2018t mean more social guaranties, because an author still\ndoesn\u2018t have an employer, so all the taxes he pays by himself. It once more\nproved that politicians in Lithuania doesn\u2018t have a clue how authors work, what\nare their real income and why are they an important part of the society.\nUnfortunatelly the most common belief is that authors must support themselves\nor become employed. In many cases they are treated as a burden for a society,\nfor the tax payers.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong> <\/strong><strong>Mudite Treimane (Latvian Writers\u00b4 Union) <\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Latvian Writers\u2019\nUnion unites 252 poets, prose writers, playwrights, literary scholars, critics\nand translators. Writers\u2019 Union popularizes and supports Latvian literature and its authors\nand arranges different literary events at the premises of the Union. It also supports its members\u2019 participation in\ndifferent literary festivals and programs, readings, conferences, creative\nworkshops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Union has its office also in Liep\u0101ja (in Kurzeme region). A\nregional literary magazine V\u0100RDS (The Word) is published by Liep\u0101ja writers. Writers\u2019 Union co-operates with International\nWriters&#8217; and Translators&#8217; House (Ventspils House).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latvian Ministry\nof Culture supports the membership of Latvian Writers\u2019 Union in 3 international\norganizations: BWC, EWC and Three Seas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latvian Writers\u2019\nUnion is one of the founding members of\nENLIT (European Network for Literary Translation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The co-operation with\nLithuanian and Estonian Writers\u2019 Unions is renewed again! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since April 2017 Latvian Writers\u2019 Union publishes the monthly\nliterary newspaper \u201cconTEXT\u201d (concerning all literature genres). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A literary magazine DOMUZ\u012aME\n(Dash) comes out 4 times a year, but is not published by Latvian Writers\u2019 Union).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Process\u201d is series of\nreadings and talks, which started at the end of 2016 at the premises of Writers\u2019 Union. The aim of readings was to come together\nregularly for authors to read new texts, to discuss the process of creation and\ncurrent themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latvian Writers\u2019\nUnion for the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> time was the organizer of very popular literary\nevent PROSE READNGS, which goes on for several days in different places in\nRiga. It is a yearly festival, taking place at the beginning of December, which\nhas become popular year by year. Latvian writers as well as guest writers of\ndifferent generations read their latest, unpublished works or fragments of\nthem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Annual Latvian\nLiterature Award (LALIGABA) is the\nmost important literary award in Latvia organized by Latvian Writers\u2019 Union and\nVentspils House. Each year the award is given to Latvian authors for the best\nprose and poetry books, the best children\u2019s books, the best translations of\nforeign literature into Latvian, and the best debut in literature. Also the\naward for lifetime achievements is given every year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latvian Writers\u2019 Union in<strong> <\/strong>2017 organized Poetry\nfestival(the largest literary\nfestival in Latvia) which was supported by State Cultural Endowment and Riga\nCity Council. The festival programme included readings of young poets, poetry\nslam, classical poetry evenings, master-classes and readings of foreign guests.\nThe programmes were traditional and experimental ones with many different\nevents, devoted to poetry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme Literary\nAcademy&nbsp; (with the support of Latvian\nMinistry of Culture) still continues to give the\npossibilities to authors \u2013 eager to go in for prose,\npoetry and playwriting \u2013 to attend courses,\nlectures, seminars and master-classes. It becomes popular year after\nyear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme of the Academy was carried out by the\nWriters\u2019 Union and supported by Latvian Ministry of\nCulture. The activities were taking place at the premises of Writers\u2019\nUnion.&nbsp; Authors had sent in their written\nworks to literary competitions, they had taken part in seminars and master-classes. Activities of Literary Academytook\nplace also in Kurzeme and in Latgale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Latvian Literature Centre\nceased to exist, Writers\u2019 Union took over part of the Centre\u2019s functions. One\nof them is the three-year program \u201cSupport for Foreign Publishers Publishing\nLatvian Literature\u201d. The Program has been and still is developed, organized and\nadministered by Latvian Writers\u2019 Union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cLatvian Literature<strong>\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;platform was established\nin order to promote recognition of Latvian literature and its distribution\nabroad, thus ensuring international cooperation among publishers, literary\nagents, writers, translators, and organisations working in the fields of\nliterature and publishing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The platform was created in a partnership of three\nchief institutions sharing the main functions \u2013 the International Writers and\nTranslators House, the Latvian Writers\u2019 Union, and the Latvian Publishers\u2019\nAssociation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 10 -12 April 2018 Latvia, along with the other\ntwo Baltic States \u2013 Estonia and Lithuania \u2013, will be participating in the\nLondon Book Fair as Market Focus country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ResidencyVentspils House <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ventspilshouse.lv\">www.ventspilshouse.lv<\/a> is still popular \u2013 not only in Latvia but also\nabroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It continues to cooperate with permanent\npartners: <em>Pro Helvetia<\/em> (Switzerland),\nliterary organisation <em>Free Word Centre<\/em>\n(London), translators house <em>Looren<\/em>\n(Switzerland), <em>BCWT<\/em> (Visby), <em>Norden<\/em>. The House has become a member of\n<em>RECIT<\/em> (a network of European literary\ntranslation centres) and <em>Res Artis<\/em>\n(Worldwide Network of Artist Residencies). Ventspils House cooperates with\ndifferent festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017 different activities had taken place: not only in the House, but also in Ventspils town\norganized by the House.
