Members of BWC discussed several ideas and decided that the event will be about Belarusian literature. It was a very well-timed decision, because the situation in Belarus concerning violations of freedom of speech and human rights was alarming for a long time and only getting worse. In a year 2020 BWC Board issued two statements condemning violence against the peaceful protesters in Belarus.

There was formed a working group to prepare the Belarusian literature event, it included Justyna Czechowska (Polish Association of Literary Translators), Dmitri Plax (Union of Belarusian Writers), Tiit Aleksejev (Estonian Writers Union) and Viveka Sjögren (Swedish Writers Union). The working group was responsible for the program of the event and searching for possible funding. Justyna Czechowska with a help of Hilde Lyng, representing Norwegian Association of Literary Translators, contacted Kopinor Foundation and received a grant of 45 000 Norwegian crowns (4500 euros) for the event. That was a very good start. But we didn‘t move any further.

Unfortunately, Belarusian literature event had to be postponed as well as GA in Visby. For two years, 2020 and 2021, all of us faced harsh reality of a coronavirus pandemic. Lockdowns, keeping social distance, working from home and avoiding social gatherings became a new normal.

In April 2021 the Board of BWC had a meeting via zoom and decided to organize an informal zoom meeting with a members in order to see each other, say hello, listen to the news of Baltic Writers and Translators Centre and symbolically mark GA. It was decided not to collect the membership fee for a year 2021 as far as GA would not be organized.

In 2022 the situation concerning covid-19 pandemic eased, it appeared possible to travel and have an annual meeting again and so it was decided to organize GA 2022 in Visby at last, hoping that the corona virus cases won‘t be on the rise again.

It all seemed well until February 24th when Russia invaded Ukraine and the war started. The Board of BWC immediately issued the statement expressing support for Ukraine and condemning Russian aggression. That was all we could do, but it seemed so not enough. Looking for other ways to help Kopinor Foundation was contacted in order to find out if there is a possibility to donate a grant of 4500 euros to Ukraine in some way. The answer was no, the money can be used only for Belarussian literature event. Willing to focus on situation in Ukraine and express support for Ukrainians The Board made a decision to postpone the Belarusian literature event until 2023 and this year to have a discussion and some poetry readings after the first GA session.

The GA approved the report.

6. War in Ukraine: what can we do? The BWC members introduced experiences in different countries in helping Ukraine, Ukrainian writers or Ukrainian refugees.

7. The GA decided unanimously to accept the application of Ukrainian Association of Translators and Interpreters and welcomed it as the new member of BWC. The GA also decided that the Ukrainian Association of Translators and Interpreters is waived to pay the membership fee for the year 2023.

Due to the Russian invasion to Ukraine, the GA decided to suspend St. Petersburg Writers’ Union from the Baltic Writers Council.

The GA decided that the membership fee for the following year will be 200 EUR.
